Kilpakosijat (Competing Proposals) was already a Broadway success, with its three sequels, even when war was still way out of fashion. King Vidor’s Big Parade changed everything, so Fox Film Corporation also wanted to produce a film to suit the theme. The result was a grand war epic that ranks high amongst silent war films of that era. Awesome war film footage alternates with more idyllic, even pious scenes set behind the front line, in which a small consolation from the merciless war is derived from happy moments with local girls or yearning letters from home. An emotion packed final scene demonstrates how respect and responsibility are always priorities in war.
